XTI Aircraft Company and Bye Aerospace Form Alliance on Hybrid/Electric Vertical Takeoff Airplane

DENVER, Colo., March 6, 2017 — XTI Aircraft Company (XTI) and Bye Aerospace, Inc. (Bye) jointly announced today that the two companies have entered into an agreement to develop a hybrid/electric prototype of XTI’s revolutionary TriFan vertical takeoff airplane.

“We’re continuing with our plan,” said Robert J. LaBelle, XTI’s Chief Executive Officer, “but we’ve made two important changes.  First, with the engineering expertise of the team at Bye Aerospace, this first prototype will be powered by a state-of-the-art hybrid-electric propulsion system.  Second, because we’re now able to significantly reduce the weight and cost of producing the TriFan, our first prototype will be a full-size TriFan 600 instead of the 65% subscale version.” 

“We’re replacing the transmission, gears, two large heavier engines and other components,” LaBelle continued, “with electric motors, batteries, generators, and a single smaller turboshaft engine.”

The TriFan is a major breakthrough in aviation and air travel.  The six-seat TriFan 600 will have the speed, range and comfort of a business jet and the ability to take off and land vertically, like a helicopter.  It will travel at over 300 miles an hour, with a range of over 1,200 miles.  Using three ducted fans, the TriFan lifts off vertically and then its two wing fans rotate forward for a seamless transition to cruise speed and its initial climb.  It will reach 35,000 feet in just ten minutes and cruise to the destination as a highly efficient business aircraft.

Sun Flyer to Benefit from Part 23 Reform

Denver, Colorado – Feb. 21, 2017 – The recent release of the revised Part 23 airworthiness standards for the Federation Aviation Regulations (FAR) will significantly streamline the process of certifying the “Sun Flyer,” the company developing the electric flight trainer announced.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a final rule in mid-December 2016 for the new Part 23, which enables a more efficient certification process for general aviation aircraft with innovative technologies, such as electric-powered Sun Flyer. The rules also include provisions for electric propulsion.

Power-on tests commenced on the prototype Sun Flyer late last year, and nearly 100 customer deposits and options for deposits have been received. The 2-seat flight trainer is intended to be the first FAA-certified, U.S.-sponsored, practical, all-electric airplane to serve the flight training and general aviation markets. It features a remarkably low operating cost, low aircraft unit cost, low noise and the elimination of CO2 exhaust pollutants.

John Knudsen, AEAC Executive Vice President and former FAA Attorney, echoed Bye’s enthusiasm for the new rule, calling the revised Part 23 standards a game-changer. “This is probably one of the best rule re-writes I have ever seen the FAA do by taking out extraneous requirements for small airplanes,” he said. “It is truly a substantial improvement.”

Bye Aerospace, SolAero Collaborate on Medium-Altitude UAV

DENVER, Colorado – Jan. 31, 2017 – Bye Aerospace announced an important engineering, development and production collaboration with SolAero Technologies Corp. to put SolAero’s solar cell technology on Bye’s solar-electric unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), called “StratoAirNet.”

The StratoAirNet family of UAVs is intended to provide persistent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) to support commercial and government security requirements. The initial medium-altitude StratoAirNet 15 proof of concept prototype is nearing completion and undergoing final assembly. The solar cell preliminary design review was recently completed with SolAero engineers. Preliminary flight tests were then conducted on a smaller scale test wing. Following measurements and fit checks, whole wing solar cell tests will commence on the 15 meter wing span StratoAirNet prototype.
